HOW TRAVEL NUTURES US

Here's My Challenge

The earth has so many beautiful places. When we explore them with our senses fully engaged, memories are etched permanently into our consciousness. Our spirits are nourished and our lives forever enriched.

I recently challenged myself to identify and try to describe some of my most memorable travel moments. It was an interesting exercise, and I challenge you to try it.  The results might surprise you, and getting there is a lot of fun!  Here are ten of my most unforgettable moments, in no particular order:

The Scorpion

Descending rough, narrow steps into a deep burial chamber in the Valley of Nobles, the path lit only by a robed Egyptian’s flickering oil lamp, and nearly fainting as a white scorpion walked in front of my sandaled toes before scurrying to a corner of the tomb.

Gaudi's Magnum Opus

Sitting in a pew inside La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, rendered speechless in the heart of Antoni Gaudi’s most ambitious, most inspired, most soaring, most spectacular creation. (Enjoy this and more of Gaudi's artistry in my Barcelona photo album.)

Couldn't Wait

Arriving at Glacier National Park, Montana, and driving straight to the top of Logan Pass, shivering in our Florida shorts and tees as we stood in awe of the silent, monumental panorama. Being flatlanders from South Florida, we had been dreaming of mountains for months.

Liquid Silver

Standing on a lane in old Visby, on the Swedish island of Gotland, watching a blazing summer sun turn the Baltic Sea to quicksilver.  Sweden and her sister Denmark are treasures of the Baltic and well worth visiting. (Enjoy a preview in my Baltic Beauties photo album!)

The Girl and the Parrott

Hiking in the hills outside of Cuzco and coming across a tiny girl with a big attitude posing in colorful Peruvian dress, hands in little fists on her hips and a live parrot perched on her head.

Sydney Harbor

Climbing Sydney Harbor Bridge, camera strapped tight to my chest, transfixed by the stunning aerial view of the Sydney Opera House far below and the enormous harbor beyond.  Sydney is one of the largest natural harbors on earth, with roughly 150 miles of shoreline.

The Princess

Leaning from my balcony in a hotel room in Stockholm, calling out to Princess Sofia, married earlier that day to Sweden’s Prince Carl Philip, delightfully surprised when she looked up and smiled at me from their horsedrawn carriage.

Chapel in the Cave

After extensively wandering Budapest one day, crossing a bridge and stumbling upon the Cave Church, a simple chapel carved deep into the rock of Gellert Hill overlooking the Danube River.

Midnight Sun

Awake at midnight on our hotel room porch near Denali, watching summer sunlight scud over forested hills, bringing waves of rolling shadows but never the blanket of true darkness.

The Cold Beer

Relaxing at a wooden table in the Estonian sun, after walking seemingly for hours, enjoying a cold local beer with my husband and a fellow traveler in a lovely square in Tallinn.
